Our Jermulowske Family With Founder Zlata, Daughter of Joshua Charles (Hatzkel) Isaiahel Jermulowski

Nadene Goldfoot
Donald Eichman
Addie Zlata "Hattie"Jermulowske was born  on January 11, 1886 on a Monday and died on a Saturday at the age of 64 years, 10 months and 28 days.  Lazdijai is 54" 14'N,  23"  31'E in Lithuania.  Also spelled as Lozdzieje and it is in Suwalki.    It is 4.3 miles from Poland's border.  For several centuries the territories of Suwalki, Lomza, and Trakai were part of a unified political unit in Greater Lithuania. After that, Suwalki and Lomza were together in the Duchy of Poland while a smaller Trakai was part of Lithuania.  Suwalki is the Gubernia.  Since WWI, Northern part is in Lithuania, southern part in Poland.  Lazdijai was partially in Poland, a major town.

Cousin Don has lots of memories about his Bubbie.  He was very close to her.
"My grandmother and me. It is my pleasure to share my memories of my Bobee.
It is impossible for me to separate myself from her. My parents divorced when I was eleven and a half months old. She saw me before I saw her. It was early winter in 1938 when my mother, Elsie, brought me to live with her sister, Haummi(Ann) and her mother Zlata. The four of us lived in a small house directly behind the Neighborhood House, built by the Jewish Relief Society for the Jewish immigrants fleeing from Eastern Europe."

Nathan Abraham Goldfoot married Zlata "Hattie" Jermulowske on November 20, 1905 in
Council, Washington, Idaho.  She was born on January 11, 1886 in Lazdijai, Suwalki, Lithuania.  At about 4'6" and 107 lbs, she was such a tiny Bubba or Bobbie, as I called her. I'd measure myself with her every time we visited.
(from records doing my genealogy searches)

She was called Zlata or Zlatie by her sister, Jenny.  Hattie must have been the anglicized name. She was listed as Addie on the 1910 census and on her wedding in Council, Idaho in 1905. We grandchildren called her "Bobby" for Bobba, the Yiddish word for Grandmother.
Aunt Alice, coming from cousin Sandra, said they were from Lazdijai and our grandmother said Suwalki and both were right.  Lazdijai, spelled Lozdzieje in their day, is in Suwalki Province and the Seinai district, spelled Sejny in their day.  It is 25 miles ENE of the town of Suwalki and Lazdijai started in the year 1570.

Anne, Bobbie and Harriet, Anne's firstborn
I remember Bubbie's shoulder dislocating and she
would be in terrible pain.
According to the marriage certificate, both Addie and Nathan lived in Council, Idaho, a goldmining town in the mountains now a resort when they married on 20 Nov. 1905.  Her brother in laws, brothers Sam and Harry Criss,  were witnesses.  Other witnesses were C.J. Urdrick and Jamy (possibly Jenny) Criss.  D.J. Richardson was the JP that married them.  Frank E. Smith was the County Recorder.   She said she immigrated from Hamburg, Germany. on the vessel "Altverten" and said she was married.  That means Nathan and she came together though they married in Council, Idaho.  She arrived at New York City port in New York around 6th of May, 1903. (Think she didn't understand the question as she never learned to speak English.)

The name Zlata was a common name in Lithuania and the four NW provinces of the Russian Empire--Vilna, Kovno, Grodno and Minsk.  The 3rd partition of Poland in 1795 added Vilna and Grodno Provinces to the Russian Empire, completing the formation of the so-called Pale of Settlement, the largest Jewish ghetto in the world, which existed for more than a century.  Lithuanian Jews became Russian subjects.
Zlata (Bet Shmu'el) Variants: Slatka, Zlat' (V), Zlatka. The (V) means it came from  Volhyn, present day Zhitomir, Rovno, Luts'k and Volyn regions.  Her mother, Esther, died when she was young, and
her father remarried and had more children.  They became very close to her.

Bobbie with son Moses (Maurice) and me
She was from Suwalki, Lithuania/Poland.  "The town's population continued to grow rapidly. In 1857 it had 11,273 inhabitants and in 1872 almost 20,000. Newly built factories needed workers and these were brought from all over the world. Because of that, the mixed Lithuania-Polish-Jewish population was soon joined by people of almost all denominations that worshiped in the Russian Empire. Located at "54 14'23 49'.  A Goldfus woman, Sora Rywa Goldfus,  lived in Suwalki and was married to Szimel Breszcz.  In 1883 they had a son, Ick Jankiel Breszcz.

Zlate Jemulosky was written on the birth record of Moses, my father.   Cousin Sandra Oster discovered it was Zlata.  Due to her heavy accent, it was hard to understand her.  Bobbie lived with Sandra's parents, daughter Anne and her husband, Werner Oster.  She must have been on hand to help Anne with all 5 of her daughters.

Zlata had a brother named Louis (Louie) who also lived in South Portland where Zlata lived.
I received his death certificate and there was no mother mentioned by name.  His birthdate was different from other information (11th Nov 1885)  .  Information was given by Gaulda (Mrs. Goldie Arthur Hahn; daughter.  Even with the later date, he was still born before my grandmother, Hattie who was recorded as 1886.  She said his father was Isaiah Jermulowske.  That was not correct.  Raymond feels that he is the full brother of Alice, Charles and Lily.
2/16/08 On ancestry.com they had him listed originally as Garmsetowske-changed to Jermulowske, on original is was Jermulowske.  It's like Zlata's wedding records in Boise;  they were so badly spelled that it's only through the witness who were the relatives that I could tell who got married, and then a few of the letters made sense.  Descendants of Joshua Charles "Hatzkel" Isaiahel Jermulowskie

Max Jermaine and wife
Anita Barkan
from daughter Kathleen: My mother and father, Max Jermaine,  were both very musical in their younger days. My dad sang all the time and my mom always played piano and sang. She still likes to play piano on occasion. Another footnote is that Sam Jermane also had a pretty good voice. On my dad's 60th birthday, he and Sam sang some songs together.

Louis was a brother of Zlata.
Louis's first child Ezra, died in 1908.  Another died in 1910.  Then he had Samuel (Zavel) in 1913, Goldie in 1916, and Max (Motle) in 1921.

My dad died of the same things my Grandfather did.  The difference was Dad was 66 years old and was also diabetic (inherited from Dina) so I'm sure that escalated the heart and organ issues.  My Dad was very disciplined with his diet , the last 20 years of his life but the process had begun by the time he found out (in his 40's ) his Dr. told him he needed to change his health lifestyle or he wouldn't live very long.  Unfortunately this was during the time when my folks had split up (my Dad was heartbroken) stress, eating (he loved sweets) and smoking(he quit immediately). Had he known in his 30's he may have lived a great deal longer.  Who's to say . . . but my Dad would have given his last breath of air if he could for those he loved.

My Bobbie did not speak English.  She said she was a Litvak.   She had no education in Lithuania/Poland/or Russia. She probably was a Litvak.  The borders kept changing.  The Litvak Jews lived in what is now Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus, and parts of Poland.  Your grandmother's family probably came from a town in either the Vilna province or the Suvalki "Suwalki"  province.  On 1920 census is says estimated birth year was 1879.  Suwalki is a gubernia, and Bialystok is a Province there, latitude 54-06, and longitude 22-56.

Max "Motle" Jermaine, son of
Bobbie's brother, Louis, in WWII.
He was born in 1921.
She was left a widow with a new baby, my aunt Anne aka Hammie.  Her Yiddish name was Zlottie(Zlata).

Great Aunt Jennie (Sheina) and me
at an Oregon beach
.
Jenny Criss, Bobbie's sister and my mother, Mildred

She came over here  from  Lithuania in 1899 according to the 1910 census.  She was 4- 6 years younger than her husband.  (Her sisters said they came from Poland.)   However, she always said that she was a Litvak. Lazdijai was taken over by Poland.  I found records I needed would be in Poland.
She lived in her little house after the children grew up.  Later, she lived with Ann and Werner and helped take care of the children.

My grandmother Hattie"Zlotta" came over from  "Russia"on May 6, 1903 along with her sisters Jenny and Bessie.  She was 17.  Bessie was  21 or 20.  Jenny must have been about 11 years old.  I have not found them in the Ellis Island Port yet.  On the Declaration of Intention paper, she said she came here via Hamburg, Germany on the ship Altverten and landed in New York.

Her name was spelled Zlate Jemulosky on Dad's birth certificate.  He was born at 277 Baker St, the residence his parents lived in.  His name was Moses Goldfoot.

Bobbie (Hattie, Addie, Zlata) always said she was a Litvak.  She never said she was Polish.  That was on the census.  It was said with pride as Lithuania was a special place, home of famous rabbis and a place of Jewish education.

On the Declaration of Intention of May 17, 1917, at age 31, she states she came from Zuwalta (Suwalki) , Russia to Hamburg, Germany on the vessel Altverten { possibly be Altai or Aultman} as that's the only ship I can find on Stephen Morse list and was married.  Her grandson David, my brother,  said it might have been  the "Antwerpen".   She came to New York on the 6th of May 1903.  She had black hair and brown eyes and was dark complected.  She was only 64 years old when she died. This was written by a clerk in the circuit court.

She was married in November 20, 1905 to Nathan Goldfoot in Council, Idaho, where her sisters Bessie was married to Sam Criss and Jennie was married to Harry Criss and Louis Jermulowske was single and living in Council in 1901 or 1902.  He didn't marry until 1908 and that was in Portland, OR.  She probably lived in Cuprum, Idaho with her sisters, a small mining town close to Council before she married.  I've learned that she worked in Cuprum, probably washing dishes in their restaurant.

More from Kathleen on Zlata's brother, Max Jermaine: My Dad had mentioned once that my Grandfather Louis came to America separately and by way of England, so you've got that right.  I believe he did come over later than his siblings, not because of choice but opportunity. I remember it being mentioned that he followed his family to Oregon sometime after they had arrived.  The story I was told was that when he went through Ellis Island they asked him his name and he said Louis and asked for his last name and he repeated Louis, so for a while his info said Louis Louis until he got it corrected.  I was also told that Louis was suppose to marry my Grandmother's sister but had fallen in love with the younger sister Dina (Dinah Rosenfeld) and so they married.  He owned scrapyards in Boise and Weiser Idaho but when he first began his business they would call his line of work,  Junkmen.  Before he retired, my Dad (Max)  took over the Weiser yard with Uncle Sam and eventually Sam left for San Francisco and my Dad was handling the remaining scrapyard in Weiser, Idaho early on in my folks marriage & while raising us .
I was told my Grandfolks spent a great deal apart while my Grandfather Louis was managing the businesses in Boise & Weiser, simultaneously while my Grandma raised the children in Portland.  The info that was on my Grandfather's death certificate was probably offered by Max's sister, Gaulda Jermulowske Hahn as she was living in Portland at the time of their passing.

Charlie was a brother of Zlata's.  Charlie was Maurice Goldfoot's favorite uncle.  He was the youngest of the siblings, and Maurice didn't have a father, so Charlie was close to him. The Hebrew translation for Ezekiel is Yechezkel.
He died at about the age of 64 years. He and wife Anna Neimark's children were Jerome and Dorothy.
I found his WWI draft registration.  He was single and living in the Weiser Hotel in Weiser, Idaho.  He was listed as an alien.  He came from Lastha, "Laszdai" Suwalki, Russia.  He had had no military experience.  He was short, slender, had dark brown eyes and black hair..  He was a hide buyer who worked for himself.  I see that both Louis and Charles were hide buyers.  The question still remains if they were full brothers or half brothers.  I'm going by the WWI Draft/Reg paper that Louis filled out that by his birthdate he would have been from the 1st wife of their father.  Charles would be from the 2nd wife.
He died at age 65 years  1 month 15 days.  I just found his WWI draft paper with name spelled Charles Jermulososki /Jermedowake with the name of the town that he was born in.  It was Lastha, Suwalki, Russia.  This is probably the town all the siblings were born in.
I found an Ecke Jermalowsky b: 1893 arriving in New York on FINLAND from Lasde, Suwalki, Russia, but listed as a female arriving 23 August 1910 at age 17.  Surely the information on sex would be correct.  The port was Antwerp, Belgium and they left August 13, 1910.  The age is close to Charles and his name would have been a Yiddish one.
There was no social security number listed for Charles.

Shal "Saul" Turnshinsky
born about 1845 in Lodz, Poland, probably
married to Rebecca (Rivka)

Alice Jermulowske was married to Max Turnshinsky Turn.  They had a furniture store in LaGrande.
I saw a black and white  photo of Max'x grandfather and was able to borrow it as a model for my next oil painting venture.  Here's my painting of Shal "Saul" Turnshinsky, a Talmud Scholar.
Alice and Max had two daughters, Sylvia and Annette.  Sylvia married Abner Verbin in about 1942 and they had Joel and David Verbin.  Annette married Dr.
Elliot Sagall and they moved to the east coast.  They had 2 boys, Richard and Ronald.

Lilly Jermulowske, sister of Zlata, married Frank Weisberg, born in Russia. They moved to California and had 3 boys; Avraham, Charles, and Raymond.  Raymond was a doctor and married Marilyn Kaplan.  They had Dvora and Adam.  Dvora became a rabbi.

The mt haplogroup of my grandmother (Bubbie or Bobbie) Zlata "Hattie" Jermulowske is W or W1h.  Haplogroup W is believed to have originated around 23,900 years ago in Western Asia. It is descended from the haplogroup N2.
Haplogroup W is found in EuropeWest Asia and South Asia. It is widely distributed at low frequencies, with a high concentration in Northern Pakistan. Haplogroup W is also found in the Maghreb among Algerians (1.08%-3.23%). Pashtuns live in Pakistan and they
were from Northern Israel and taken
as slaves by the Assyrians long ago.  They were the ancient Israelites.
Additionally, the clade has been observed among ancient Egyptian mummies excavated at the Abusir el-Meleq archaeological site in Middle Egypt, which date from the Ptolemaic era.  Granddaughter Sandra was the testee through FTDNA.    Her greatest matches to people show the origin from the Russian Federation
that are Ashkenazi Jews.
All daughters of Zlata's mother, Esther, who may have died in Zlata's birth or afterwards, will
carry the same W haplogroup.  That would be Bessie and Jennie and Zlata.  I'd like to know if

Zlata's father's 2nd wife was the sister of Esther or not.  That would mean that half sisters Lilly and Alice would have a different haplotype.  The haplogroup goes from mother to daughter forever. Yet a man can test himself and find the Y haplogroup of his father and the mtDNA haplogroup of his mother.  Men just can't send it on to his children like the mother does.

Goldfoot 3rd Cousins Meeting For 1st Time

Nadene Goldfoot
Ian, Myself, and my brother David
all three are Goldfoots; meeting at David's home-
our 3rd cousin, from the South African branch.
Here's the story.

Nathan "Nokhim Avram"Abraham" of Abram Goldfus, Telsiai, Kaunas, Lithuania
                            b: January 1, 1871, d: July 19, 1912 Portland, Oregon USA
My grandfather that I never knew.  Evidently, my father
remembers combing his beard, so he must have grown one, though he was only 41 years 6 months 18 days old when he was killed in a horse and wagon accident when the horse was spooked and threw him out of the wagon and he hit his head and never gained consciousness again.  He was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital, the old one.  My son is a nurse at the new St. Vincent's Hospital.

Charlie and Meshkie

Maurice Goldfoot b: 1908 and myself
Meshkie
Charles Goldfoot
Hojkel (Hochkie)
b: 1906
Nathan died when his son, my father, Maurice (Moses), was 4 years old.  His death forced my father and his 2 years older brother, Charlie, so sell newspapers on the streets of Portland to help their mother who had 2 little girls at home to tend, Elsie b: 1911 and Anne b: 1912, 4 months after Nathan's death. Bubba never did learn to speak English.
She spoke Yiddish.

Our Goldfoot family, found in Telsiai, Lithuania, spelled our surname as Goldfus, which is a Yiddish spelling for Goldfuss, which is German.  I found some of us with the latter spelling, too.  Jews had been in Lithuania since 1321.  In 1495 they were residing in Vilna, Lithuania, Grodno and Kovno.  By 1529 they even received a charter guaranteeing freedom of movement and employment.  But, in 1495-1502, they were excluded from Lithuania, and between 1566-72, the Jewish badge was introduced and Jews could not give evidence in a courtroom.

Jews settled in Telz at the beginning of the 17th century.  From 1623 to 1764, the "Vaad Medinath Lita" was established, and the Telz community was a subject of the "Kahal" of the Keidan district.  By 1797 the population of Telz was 2,500, and of them, 1,650 were Jews, which was 66%.  Telz Jews suffered from blood libels, one in 1758 and the 2nd in 1827.  The accused were released by the court, but the whole ordeal caused all a lot of fear.  Estate owners didn't like the Jews and accused them of being competitors in producing and selling alcohol, so in 1825 the nobles asked the Tsar to expel the Jews because they "spread diseases and threaten to rob and to steal..." Our ancestor, Movsha, was a distiller!

Nathan's great grandfather had been alive then, Iosel Josel Symka ben Yankel Goldfus b: 1798 d: December 19, 1878, born and raised in Telz.  His wife was Rasha.  I have 12 children listed for them.

They were part of Russia from 1795 to 1918.  During WWI, 100,000 Jews were expelled or emigrated to the Russian interior.  In 1893 there was a cholera epidemic and many poor Jews died.  Finally Lithuania became independent and had national autonomy from 1918 to 1924.  In 1919 Vilna was lost and became part of Poland.  This move weakened the Jews of Lithuania and after 1924, autonomy was restricted to religious matters and the economic position of the Jews deteriorated in the coming years.

I've been able to go back to 1730 when Iones or Jonah Goldfus was born in Telsiai, Kaunas, Lithuania.  I don't know who he was married to but had two sons, Abram b: 1752 and Mark b: 1753.

Zlata Jermulowkse b; January 11, 1886 Lazdijai, Lithuania
on the border with Poland d: December 9, 1950, Portland, Oregon
Between 1869 to 1872 there was a famine in Lithuania.  Nathan was born in the middle of it.

Zlata Goldfoot nee Jermulowske b:, my father and me when a baby 1934
Our Bobba was very short, as her legs had been broken in a pogrom in Lithuania,
and she was short to start with.  I don't know who ever called her Hattie, but she bore that

name, though we all called her the Yiddish term for grandma, which was Bubbie.  I turned
it into Bobbie.
My grandfather was Nathan Abraham Goldfus b: January 1, 1871 in Telsiai, Lithuania. He spoke Yiddish.   He may have left Lithuania because of the Russian Draft because at this time Lithuania was part of Russia.   He emigrated to England, then moved onto Dublin, Ireland, and finally managed to get into the USA.  I found him married to my grandmother, Zlata Jermulowske in Council, Idaho on November 20, 1905 in Washington County, Idaho.  A train had just started going through Council and my grandfather got off there.  My grandmother, Zlata, was already living nearby with her sisters and their husbands living there, Sam and Harry Criss with wives Bessie and Jenny Jermulowske.  The spelling on the marriage certificate was ineligible.  Luckily, I recognized the witnesses who were family members. I believe I found this record in Boise, Idaho.   Neither Zlata nor Nathan could read or write.  According to the marriage certificate, both Addie and Nathan lived in Council, Idaho when they married on 20 Nov. 1905.  Sam and Harry Criss were witnesses.
After Charles, their first son was born in Council, they took the train and settled in Portland, Oregon.

My grandmother Hattie"Zlata" came over from  "Russia"on May 6, 1903 along with her sisters Jenny and Bessie.  She was 17.  Bessie was  21 or 20.  Jenny must have been about 11 years old.  I have not found them in the Ellis Island Port yet.  On the Declaration of Intention paper, she said she came here via Hamburg, Germany on the ship Altverten and landed in New York.  On the Declaration of Intention of May 17, 1917, at age 31, she states she came from Zuwalta, Russia to Hamburg, Germany on the vessel Altverten { possibly be Altai or Aultman} as that's the only ship I can find on Stephen Morse list and was married. Her grandson David said it might have been  the "Antwerpen".   She came to New York on the 6th of May 1903.  She had black hair and brown eyes and was dark complected.  She was only 64 years old when she died. This was written by a clerk in the circuit court.

Great aunt Jenny Criss with my mother, Mildred Goldfoot
She was married in November 20, 1905 to Nathan Goldfoot in Council, Idaho, where her sisters Bessie was married to Sam Criss and Jennie was married to Harry Criss and Louis Jermulowske was single and living in Council in 1901 or 1902.  He didn't marry until 1908 and that was in Portland, OR.  9/11/04  I received information from Idaho Historical Society on their marriage.  They were married at 8:00a.m. by the Justice of the Peace in Council, Idaho. "The ceremony which made M. Goldfoot and Miss Addie Jarmulosky man and wife was performed at Council at 8 o'clock a. m. Friday, by D. J. Richardson in his usual manner of impressive dignity.  From the "Weiser Scene-Weekly signal, Weiser, Idaho, Wed. Nov 29, 1905 Pg 5 column 3. Witnesses were: Samuel Criss & Harry Criss, and Jenny Criss.
She probably lived in Cuprum, Idaho with her sisters, a small mining town close to Council before she married.

Nathan's father was Movsha ben Josel Goldfus b: 1836 in Telsiai.  d: November 8, 1878 in Telsiai.  So he died when Nathan was 7 years old.  This is interesting as my father was named Moses " Moshe" Goldfoot and was a 2nd son with Charles 2 years older.  Movsha's wife was Beile (Beila).

Movsha's father was Iosel Josel Symka ben Yankel Goldfus.  One of his other sons was Avrohom Abraham Haim Goldfus b: c1820.

                                                                  Ireland

"A permanent settlement of Jews in Ireland was definitely established in the late fifteenth century. Following their expulsion from Portugal in 1496, some of these Marrano Jews settled on Ireland's south coast. One of them, William Annyas, was elected as mayor of Youghal, County Cork, in 1555, there was also Francis Annyas (Ãnes) a three time Mayor of Youghal in 1569, 1576 and 1581."

In Dublin, I had found Nathan, our grandfather,  married to a Lena Goldberg on February 21, 1893. He was listed as a commercial traveler and needed no license.    A witness was Leah Goldberg, her mother, b:c1850.  Her father was Naftolee Goldberg, b: c1845, a capmaker.   She was from someplace in Russia. In June 1893 he was at Londonderry, Ireland, a port city,  heading for Quebec, Canada.  By June 14, 1893, he was headed for Winnipeg, Canada on a ship, Parisian,  listed as single and first arriving on that date in Quebec, Canada.  They had his listed as Nathan Goldfort. (Nathan: June 14, 1893 on Parisian ship of Allen line (British 1881-) from Londonderry, Ireland to Winnipeg at age 22. b: 1871.)  That marriage didn't last long, about only 4 months.  We knew that he had previously been married without any issue, and wanted a family, but that was it.  I haven't been able to ever find him living in Canada.

Nathan in 1893 lived at 13 Arbutus Place, SCR.
A researcher told me about this information.  I can't remember which one it was but he was born in 1949.  Nathan lived at 13 Arbutus Place, South  Circular Road, Dublin Ireland in 1893 when he married Lena Goldberg.  I found this about the address: (I (not my grandfather)  was born in 1949 in a nursing home located just down the street at 102 South Circular Road, Portobello, (now renumbered as no. 18), which house had been the home of the President’s father, the first Chief Rabbi of Ireland, Isaac Herzog, throughout the 1920s. (He later moved the short distance to 33, Bloomfield Avenue for the remaining years of his ministry here before becoming Chief Rabbi of Eretz Israel.) I was accordingly born in the same house where Chaim Herzog spent most of his Dublin childhood and where his gifted brother, the late Ya’acov Herzog, had been born in 1921."  Nathan left this addresss, at least 4 months later after February 21, 1893 when he married Lena.

By 1897, 3,088 Jews remained in Telsiai, Lithuania which was  (51% of Telsiai's population. ) All would be killed in the Holoscaust of WWII.

Another researcher sent me this piece. "-He indicated in the 1910 census that he had arrived in the U.S. in 1896. So presumably, he was in Canada from 1893 to 1896. As the ship's arrival indicated that he was on his way to Winnipeg, we may assume that he was either there or in one of the other Canadian prairie cities with a Jewish population. Winnipeg has city directories for 1890 and 1897, but nothing in-between. I have access to the Canadian records on ancestry, but could not find him. My great-grandmother's brothers were in Alberta at that time. It was truly the wild west in those days. " 1910 would be the last census for him as he died on July 19, 1912 in Portland, Oregon.

Nathan's 1st cousin was LOUIS Yehudah Leib ben "Hyman-"Louis Goldfus", b: November 19, 1867 in Telsiai, d: March 18, 1955 in Capetown, South Africa, who was the grandfather of Ian Goldfoot.   Louis's father was Avrohom Abraham Haim Goldfus b: abt 1820 in Telsiai.

Avrohom (Abraham) Haim Goldfus b: c1820 seems to be a common ancestor for both myself and my brother and Ian Goldfoot and his sister, Denise.  David and I are his great grandniece and great grandnephew; and Ian Goldfoot and sister Denise are his great grandson and great granddaughter.

David Goldfoot, son of Maurice and Ian Goldfoot, son of Solomon:  3rd cousins
David Alan Goldfoot and Ian Goldfoot are therefore 3rd cousins by genealogy.   Interestingly, DNA has David and Ian as 2nd cousins with me as Ian's 3rd cousin on FTDNA.

Ian's father was SOLOMON "Shlomo" "Solly" Goldfoot b: August 1904 in Dublin, Ireland; d: February 14, 1978 Capetown/Johannesburg, South Africa.  His mother was Mary Alpert b: 1906 Kilmarnock, Scotland, d: bef 1943 Johannesburg, South Africa.

Mary died  and Solomon remarried in 1943 to Jenny "Genundel"bat Yosef Shmuel Frankel.  They had a daughter, Denise Goldfoot.

It seems that many Jewish Lithuanians made their way to England and then Dublin and onto South Africa.  When I emigrated to Israel, I found that the education department had been developed by South Africans who were then the heads of departments.  They must have arrived earlier than we Americans.  Abba Eban certainly was one.  50,000 Jews still live in Johannesburg, South Africa.

A cousin I had learned about who is known to Ian Goldfoot is Stanley Goldfoot b: 1914 in South Africa.  He is also our 3rd cousin through genealogy.  Stanley was the Chief of Intelligence for the Stern Group (called gang by the British) in Palestine.  I met him while living in Israel from 1980-end of 1985.  We met at the KING DAVID HOTEL in Jerusalem.  I asked how I would know him and he replied, "Don't worry.  I'll know you." I've added him on the genealogy tree below.  Stanley is Ian's 2nd cousin.  Since then, we met at his home in Jerusalem.

Another 3rd cousin I have contacted with is also from South Africa and is a Gochin who were from Papile, Lithuania.  His ancestor had married a Goldfoot lady.

One other I want to mention is one of 2 heads of the Halpern & Branches group on FTDNA.  I found out that we are connected to Rabbi Samson Wertheimer b: 1658 Worms, Germany, d: 1724 Vienna, Austria  He in turn was known to connect to RASHI b: 1040 Troyes, France d: 1105 Troyes, France, and he was known to connect to King David of Israel b: 1010 BCE-d: 970 BCE

3/11/08  Oral history from Stanley Goldfoot and Denise's father, Solomon Goldfoot was that they were descendants of  Vilna Gaon, who was Elijah Ben Solomon Zalman.  1720-1797.  Talmudist.  He was born in Lithuania and was early famed for his scholarship.  From 1740-1745 he traveled among the Jewish communities of Poland and Germany, settling in Vilna where he taught and later founded his own academy.  He lived in seclusion and refused rabbinic office.  He was called a saint and a scholar.  He led the opposition to the Hasidim in Lithuania, ordering their excommunication and the destruction of their literature.  His obdurate attitude checked the spread of Hasidism in Lithuania.  When he was about 60, he set out unaccompanied for Palestine but returned before reading it.  His reputation lies primarily in the field of halakhah.  He sought to establish critical texts of the authoritative rabbinic writings, resorting also to emendations.  He avoided pilpul and based his views and rulings upon the plain meaning of the text.  He regarded highly the early kabbalistic works, and was extremely critical of philosophy.  He was interested in secular studies insofar as they threw light on the Torah, but he opposed the Haskalah.  His works include commentaries on the Bible, annotations on the Talmud, Midrash, and Zohar, works on mathematics, the geography of Palestine, Hebrew grammar, etc.  He exercised a vast influence on his own and succeeding generations, the Mitnaggedim regarding him as their spiritual leader.
4/1/15  and 6/17/15,  He died at age 92 from old age, on Lithuania death list of LitvakSIG.  On Tevet 5.  also from Jewishgen through Dennis Khan.

Through genealogy using this very blog and through DNA, David and I finally met our 3rd cousin, Ian.   It just happened that the two men were living in the same state.  What was nice was that we met on a Friday for a Shabbat dinner. Through DNA, we find that Ian and David are 2nd cousins but I'm a 3rd cousin, which we are according to our genealogy.    Ian and David share 174.29451cMs over 29 segments. They also share their Y haplogroup line of Q-M242.   Ian and one of David's sons share 113.4722cMs over 20 segments.  They are  listed as 3rd cousins. Information given doesn't show details of how many times removed one is.  This son and Ian should be 3rd cousins once removed.    Ian and I share 143.29375cMs over 23 segments.  We are  3rd cousins. Ian and my son, Steve, of course are 3rd cousins once removed and share 110.98878cMs over 18 segments.  Ian and Steve's wife  are 5th cousins and share 31.07031cMs over 12 segments.
I have a 1st cousin, Nate Goldfoot.  His wife tested and also matches Ian as a 5th cousin sharing 66.54338cMs over 22 segments.  I could go on and on with relatives matching Ian.

On GedMatch, David and Ian share:
Largest segment = 34.8 cM
Total of segments > 7 cM = 107.0 cM
5 matching segments of a segment 7cMs and over
Estimated number of generations to MRCA = 3.5 Most Recent Common Ancestor 3.5 generations

Ian and I share: Largest segment = 29.7 cM
Total of segments > 7 cM = 116.7 cM
7 matching segments
Estimated number of generations to MRCA = 3.5

Descendants of Iones Jonah Goldfus:  Ian's father  and David's grandfather  are #6 generations and are highlighted..  David's grandfather is Nathan.  Ian's father is Solomon.

I had found many Goldfus people in Lithuania and did add a few here and there by dates, but most all were found, and on the website of Jewish Genealogy (Jewishgen.org. )with the knowledge of who their fathers were.    My findings were even checked by a lady who also had Goldfoot on her tree, Gene Lepere, who is a Hirschhorn and author of 2 books, NEVER PASS THIS WAY AGAIN and a book about her father, Little Man in a Big Hurry: The Life of Joseph H. Hirshhorn, Uranium King and Art Collector

All this and Nathan's grave in Hebrew says that his father was Chaim Itzak Goldfus. I had found a Chaim but none with a middle name.   We had known Nathan to have no middle name.  Since our grandmother is the one who ordered the headstone, I presume she knew something, but haven't been able to find a record according to this piece of information.  One researcher thought that the name, "Abraham," was significant to connect the South African with us, and lo and behold, Nathan's middle child, the one who died as an infant, was Abraham.  With DNA, we do know we are connected.
